Swagwomen go walking

Carnarvon National Park is a giant swathe of lush forest split down the middle by a bunch of very large sandstone canyons. According to the bloke at the Takarraka info centre, the sandstone is so porous that thousands of years worth of water continuously seeps through the canyon, feeding the Carnarvon river. So, years of drought haven’t affected the park at all and on all the surrounding properties the stock are fat and healthy.

Yesterday we walked for 20kms through these canyons and along the Carnarvon River. It took us about 8 hours, with a lengthy lunch stop and a 30 minute fruit-cake-and-Assam-tea stop. Explaining it doesn’t do it justice, but maybe these photos might.

Astonishingly, we packed enough food, snacks and beverages to feed a small hiking group. And there were no hiccups for the entire walk. Well, there was one point where I slipped on a slippery rock and face planted into mossy, ice cold gorge-water.

I also backed the car into a tree on our way back to camp. I consoled myself with the thought that it wasn’t another hiker’s car, or a roo. Both car and tree sustained only minor, superficial injuries.

Other than that, our adventure into Queensland’s wilderness went off without a hitch!

We’ve now had a complete change of pace, as Mum’s found a pub that’s playing AFL and serving lamb roast… I’ve lost her for the evening.

  1. Hi there Jolly Swagwomen. First two blogs excellent Jess. You two have stirred up the red dirt in my veins. Any way pity about the fuel oversight. Someone was looking over you! I am green with envy of course, & I am concerned about you getting to Darwin in time to show up for work. Sally read yesterday’s blog today. Here for coffee & lunch. Doesn’t seem too distraught with me at the wheel. She still has about three weeks to go before she can drive again.
Dad/Parps has nasty cold, otherwise all’s well here. Dockers rallied yesterday (after severe dressing down by coach) to narrowly take match. Swans are playing now Susan, so good luck. Love to both & take care. From us in the West. Mama /Granny xxxxoooo
